I lost a lot of perennials this winter:

8 of 10 verbena 4 of 6 dianthus (two of which have come back every year for five years - but not this year). 1 tassel fern Two ice plants

My ajuga has come back for years - this year it's back but thin and weak.

On the other hand, the mums I planted form our pots in the late fall came back.

Was it a hard winter?
