I have a hydraengae which was given to me as a gift. How do i plant it outside. Zone 4
The key is to plant it in a shady spot, preferably the wetest part of your yard. They love water and whither in the intense sun. I plant mine back under trees. Planting is typical - just dig a hole 2 or 3 times biger than the root ball and put them in so they are at the same depth as they were in the pot. I condition the soil - i.e. pull it all out - take it ino the woods, mix it with leaf grow or some sort of soil conditioner, some tope soil and some peat moss. Then use the result to plant. You'll end up with too much, because of what you added, but you can use it later.
Make sure it is a hardy (survives the winter in your area) hydrangea. Many "gift" hydrangeas are not hardy in Minnesota, and planting it out would be a waste of time.
