I recently purchased a home with a back yard that needs to be re-graded. We will be doing a lot of digging and I'm sure will encounter quite a few roots. I wonder if anyone knows how big a root you can cut without killing a tree. My neighbor and I decided there must be some formula, ie: you can cut a root that's so many inches thick of a tree with a trunk that's so many inches in diameter. I have no idea where to start. If anyone has any info on this topic, It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
