Weed Control — Ortho, Safe Near Trees? viewed 214 times

I have weeds/grass growing right at the base of my Italian Cypress tree. I have Ortho Season Long weed killer, which says it is safe around landscaped areas except vegetable gardens. I'm assuming that means it's okay to use around trees & bushes, therefore, is it safe to use near my Cypress tree or will it damage the Cypress tree? What is the best course of action to use against the weed coming up in this area. It is literally coming up between the pole & the Cypress tree itself, right at the base, and appears to be grass and it grows really tall. I was thinking I could use weed killer to kill the grass/weeds, then apply Miracle grow potting soil to the area and add some black plastic to prevent the weeds/grass from coming up again. Will this work or is it not a good idea?

You can use the Ortho Season Long Weed Killer around your Italian Cypress trees, but, be very careful not to get it on the leaves of the cypress trees. Using the Miracle Gro potting soil around the trees would also be fine, but no more than 1" deep and do not place it directly against the trunk of the trees. I would not recommend using plastic mulch around the trees as it impedes the infiltration of air and water to the roots of the plant.
